While roaming Indiana, I met Journey Belle and her
mother, Megan! Journey Belle is part of the Beads in the Mail Program here in
Indiana. Journey Belle received treatment in a NICU department that didn't carry Beads of Courage, so her mother contacted Beads of Courage after Journey’s stay in the NICU. |

Journey Belle received beads for all of her hospital stays,
treatments, and surgeries. When I saw her beads, there were all sorts of
colors, but the ones that stuck out to me were the light green ones, next to
all the yellow beads. When I asked Megan what those beads meant, she told me
that light green beads represented all sorts of scans and tests. Megan then told me that her beads “show what all Journey has been through and
everything she has overcome.” Journey Belle is now 2 years old, and doesn’t
have a favorite bead yet, but when I asked Megan which one she likes, she said
“I do not have a
favorite. Each bead shows us what Journey has been through and overcome. These
beads will be something tangible that she can hold one day and say ‘wow I went
through ALL of this.’ She will have scars, physical and emotional, due to her
illnesses and having something tangible to show how strong she is.”
